PARADISE
WITHIN REACH
Sand dunes at first light, crayfish for dinner and a sea breeze that turns up every afternoon. Here is how a slow weekend in Lancelin unfolds.
There is a moment on the drive north when the city finally lets go. The traffic thins, the scrub turns silver green and the ocean starts showing between the dunes. By the time you roll into Lancelin, the working week already feels a long way behind you.
FRIDAY EVENING
The drive up
Leave after work and you will reach the coast road before the light goes. Once you pick up the Indian Ocean Drive, the sea stays close for much of the trip: limestone and banksia on one side, flashes of turquoise on the other. Wind the windows down for the last stretch. You will smell the salt before you see the bay.
Check in, grab something easy for dinner and leave the planning for tomorrow. Lancelin rewards an early night.
SATURDAY MORNING
The dunes
The white sand dunes on the edge of town are the reason plenty of people make the trip at all. Hire a sandboard, climb a ridgeline and find out how long you can stay upright on the way down. Younger kids are happy on the gentler slopes, while teenagers will be back at the top before you have caught your breath.
Get there before nine. The sand is still cool, the light is soft and you will have most of the ridgelines to yourself.
Rather ride than climb? Guided 4WD tours head out across the dunes daily. Either way, bring water and sunscreen, because there is no shade once you are up there.
SATURDAY AFTERNOON
On the water
By early afternoon the sea breeze arrives, and the sails follow. Lancelin has long been a favourite with windsurfers and kitesurfers, and on a good day the bay fills with colour.
Prefer your water calm? An offshore reef shelters much of the bay, so mornings are often glassy enough for a swim, a paddle or a snorkel through the shallows.
SATURDAY EVENING
The table
Lancelin is a fishing town at heart, and western rock lobster (to locals, simply crays) is the taste of the place. Look for it on menus around town while it is in season.
Otherwise keep it simple: fish and chips on the foreshore as the day falls into the Indian Ocean. On this stretch of coast, sunset is the main event.
SUNDAY
The case for staying longer
Sunday mornings here move slowly. A coffee, one last swim, a walk along the sand while the town wakes up. Then comes the drive home, and the question that follows most visitors back to Perth: what would it be like if every weekend felt like this?
That question is where Lancelin South begins. The new coastal community is planned for people who want the Lancelin pace as part of everyday life, whether that means a permanent home, a place for the whole family to gather, or a home away from home.
